Stuck in the Airport? Don't Let Your Patience Take Flight (and Lose Your Cash)!

Let's face it, flight delays are the travel gremlins nobody likes to encounter. They disrupt your plans, test your patience, and leave you feeling like a character in a particularly dull airport movie. But fear not, fellow traveller! This isn't just a story of woe, it's an empowering guide to claiming compensation and turning that delay into a (slightly less nightmarish) travel experience.

Waiting in the airport

First things first - are you even eligible?

Great news! You might be able to land some compensation if your flight falls into one of these categories:

Departing from the UK or EU (Iceland, Norway, Switzerland included):

Doesn't matter which airline. Basically, the EU has your back (high five, Europe!).

Arriving in the UK on a UK or EU airline:

Consider it a homecoming bonus

Arriving in the EU with a UK airline:

Because even Brits deserve a break sometimes.


Not on this list? 

Don't fret! The rules get trickier for other destinations, but you can still check with your airline to see what they offer.


Okay, I qualify! Now what?

While you're stuck in purgatory (otherwise known as the departure lounge), here's what you should be asking the airline:

Food and Drinks: 

Forget airplane peanuts! You're entitled to sustenance to keep those hunger pangs at bay.

Communication: 

Need to call loved ones and break the news? The airline should provide access to emails and phone calls.

Accommodation: 

Stranded overnight? Don't despair! The airline should sort you out with a hotel (and maybe even a ride there).


Key point: 

These perks depend on the delay length and flight distance. Don't be shy - ask if these aren't offered! If you have to pay upfront, keep those receipts - you might be able to claim them back later (as long as they're reasonable - no caviar and champagne sprees!).


Compensation Time!

Now for the real reason we're all here:

The moolah! You can claim compensation if your flight arrives more than 3 hours late and it's the airline's fault (think technical problems, not surprise volcanic eruptions).

Connecting Flights:

For those jet-setting through the UK, you can claim compensation if:

  • You booked both flights together

  • The delay was over 3 hours

  • The airline messed up (not Mother Nature)

Feeling Hangry and Want Out?

If your flight is delayed by 5 hours or more, you can ditch the flight altogether and demand:

  • A full refund for your flight

  • Refunds for any onward or return flights with the same airline

  • If you're mid-journey, a flight back to where you started


Top Tip: 

Don't wait! Let the airline know ASAP if you're ditching the flight.


Taking the Flight (But Still Annoyed)?

If you decide to brave the delay, you can still claim up to £520 in compensation, depending on the distance and reason for the delay.


Remember: 

You have six years to make a flight delay claim, so don't lose hope!
