No More Buyer's Remorse: Your Right to Return Online Purchases (Thanks to the Consumer Contracts Regs!)

Updated: Dec 2

Have you ever been swept up in the thrill of online shopping, only to find the item you received wasn't exactly what you envisioned? We've all been there! But what if I told you there's a law in place to protect you from buyer's remorse? That's where the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 (CCR 2013) come in!

Recently, we had the pleasure of helping a client navigate this exact situation. Our client ordered a pair of designer sunglasses online, but upon arrival, he found they didn't suit his face shape. Disappointed, he wasn't sure if he could return them.

Enter the CCR 2013: Your 14-Day Safety Net

The CCR 2013 is a lifesaver for online shoppers. It grants you a 14-day cooling-off period for most online and mail-order purchases. This means you have 14 days, from the day you receive the item, to change your mind and return it for a refund.

There are a few exceptions, like perishable goods but for most online purchases, the CCR 2013 is your friend.

Helping the Client Say Goodbye to His Shades

Armed with this knowledge, we guided the client through the return process. We checked the retailer's return policy (which should be easily accessible on their website) and confirmed it aligned with the CCR 2013.

The client then contacted the retailer, clearly stating his intention to return the sunglasses under the CCR 2013. The retailer, upon being informed of the regulations, promptly provided the client with a returns label and processed his refund once they received the sunglasses back.

Empowering Yourself as an Online Shopper

This experience is a reminder that you have rights as an online consumer. Here are some key takeaways:

  • Know your cooling-off period: The CCR 2013 grants you 14 days to return most online purchases.

  • Check the retailer's return policy: While the CCR 2013 sets the minimum standard, some retailers offer even more generous return policies.

  • Don't be afraid to ask questions: If you're unsure about your return rights, contact the retailer directly or seek guidance from a consumer advocate.

By understanding your rights under the CCR 2013, you can shop online with confidence, knowing you have a safety net in case that perfect purchase turns out to be not-so-perfect after all. So, happy shopping (and returning if needed)!
