ENERGY prices - what’s happening, and what can I do?

Updated: Oct 2

With Winter well on the way and the ever-increasing cost of living crisis you may be wondering what happens to energy prices - the Regulator (Ofgem) has announced an increase in the price cap (up to 10%) from 1st October to the end of the year. They review the cap every 3 months….

Why?

This is due to the rising energy costs, i.e. the Global cost of energy which is increasing What can I do? There are a few things you can check out as follows :

1. Ask your current supplier if they will agree to lock you into a fixed tariff.

2. Shop around and consider changing providers.

3. Consider your payment method and tariff - direct debits are better to ensure you pay the same through the Summer and Winter months, or a variable direct debit where you pay for exactly what you use.

4. Ask for a Smart Meter as these save you money.

5. If your supplier is unhelpful consider a complaint to them - if they do not resolve it, ask the Energy Ombudsman to step in which is free to use and could solve the issue: https://www.energyombudsman.org

Practical Tips?

1. Check the health of your boiler - a knackered boiler will be inefficient and cost you more! Check the boiler’s flow temperature - reducing it will save money….

2. Watch the gap! Heat can escape through door gaps, windows and loft space.

3. Check your thermostat - only put it on when you need it!

4. Consider insulation - the cost may be worth the outlay to reduce future bills though you may qualify for a Government grant for free or reduced cost insulation.

5. Lights on! Consider changing your bulbs to LED’s as these use up to 80% less energy!

Any further recommendations?

Combine them into one simple and manageable payment! Not only can this make life easier, but it can also help reduce your overall costs.
